Attorney Cole Thaler
Cole Thaler is a Staff Attorney based in the Southern Regional Office of Lambda Legal, the largest and oldest national legal organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV.
Thaler, Lambda Legal's transgender rights attorney, works solely on matters that directly affect the transgender community. His litigation priorities include improving access to health care for transgender individuals, amending identity documents to reflect the proper name and sex, upholding the legal validity of his clients' relationships and families, ending harassment of transgender youth in schools and advancing workplace equality. Thaler's work also includes education, outreach and policy advocacy on behalf of all members of the transgender community.
Prior to joining Lambda Legal in May 2005, Thaler was an associate at the Law Firm of Edward F. Berlin, P.C. in Massachusetts, where his civil practice included family law matters, consumer protection claims, landlord/tenant disputes, employment issues and torts. Prior to that, Thaler served as a law clerk to the eleven Western Massachusetts Justices of the Superior Court. While in law school, Thaler provided research assistance on the litigation of transgender-related cases at Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders and worked in the Employment Unit of Greater Boston Legal Services. In 2002, Thaler co-founded the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition and led a successful lobbying effort to pass a civil rights ordinance in the City of Boston prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity and gender expression. Thaler is a member of the Steering Committee of the National Center for Transgender Equality and was the recipient of the Tiffany Club of New England's 2004 Activist of the Year Award.
Thaler received his bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Williams College and his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law.
