Community Grants Build Strong Foundation for Young Children We are committed to serving the Transgender community Children's Trust awards funding to 16 parent support programs in Washington State
07/20/07 SEATTLE, Community organizations across Washington State have joined forces with Children's Trust of Washington, a government agency that promotes public awareness about child abuse and neglect, to support programs establishing healthy relationships between new parents and their children.
Children's Trust is providing grants totaling up to $610,000 to 16 community-based centers residing in King, Snohomish, Franklin, Lewis, and a number of other counties in Washington. The grant partnerships were formed with the initiative to create a strong and healthy foundation for newborns and young children as well as their families. "We think that, in terms of both the available research and evidence behind quality investments in the early years, our focus on supporting parents from the beginning is paramount to later success in school and life," says Joan Sharp, Children's Trust of Washington executive director.
The grants are made possible through federal funds Children's Trust receives from the Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) program. The CBCAP program supports the formation and operation of community-based and family-focused programs that work to fight against child abuse and neglect in order to strengthen families. The grant awards given this year derive from federal and state funds along with funds matched by local communities. The various programs being funded include assisting homeless teen mothers, helping parents raise children with special needs, introducing successful parenting skills to families of diverse cultures, and providing nurse home visits to young mothers. The range of services provided by these community programs share a common goal of building and ensuring a safe and promising life for all children in locations across Washington State. Says Sharp, "Whenever we can assist parents in their job as their child's first and most important teacher, children will benefit from a more nurturing and loving beginning in the world."
